Viterion rolls out cellular monitor in San Jose

By Jeff Rowe, Contributing Writer

How do you make an existing remote healthcare monitor more up-to-date?  Take the wires off.

While that may seem a feeble attempt at a joke, it's close to how many telehealth vendors ensure that their products are ready to go mobile.

At the American Telemedicine Association's 17th Annual International Meeting & Exposition in San Jose, Calif., taking place from April 29 to May 1, Viterion Telehealth, a business of Bayer Healthcare, will unveil the V200 Cellular TeleHealth Monitor. As the name suggests, the V200 Cellular will provide the same benefits as the current V200, but it will be much more mobile.

As Rick Kates, global head of Viterion, puts it, "A growing number of patients don't have land lines, and we're seeing increasing demand from customers, and potential customers, to address the gap."

Kates points out that Viterion's products are increasingly patient-centric, meaning they can be customized to suit the needs of each patient. The first phase of the V200, released in 2009, had the same peripherals for every patient, but Phase 2, released in 2011, allows for individual customization.

Kates uses the example of a patient with congestive heart failure who needs to track standard metrics such as blood pressure and body weight, but the healthcare professionals who are managing the patient's case also need to take into account that she's a diabetic. With the V200, and now the V200 Cellular, that added element can more easily be incorporated into the patient's care plan.

Since 2003, Viterion has focused much of its efforts on assisting the Veterans Administration build its telehealth program, but the company is beginning to expand the range of its business to include hospitals, ACOs and payers and providers looking to telehealth as part of a more comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery.

"We believe we have a proven track record on the local, regional and national levels," Kates says, "and we work to understand and support our clients from the first monitor to the 1,000th."

Viterion also will introduce a mobile wound management product.  Consisting of proprietary software that is used on a "repurposed" cell phone, the device will enable patients to send images of a wound to a provider so that the provider can manage a treatment program from a distance.

Viterion will be in Booth #1228 in the ATA Exhibit Hall.
