Venture capital takes an interest in telemedicine

By Bernard Harris, Jr., MD, MBA
, President,
American Telemedicine Association

Healthcare in the United States is a $2.6 trillion annual market. Today, telemedicine remains a very small part of this huge market, but there are indications that this may soon change. Market forecasts generally focus on specific segments of telemedicine, such as home monitoring, teleradiology or mobile health, but they are all consistent in one way: They predict robust growth for telemedicine in the foreseeable future. Across the board, market research firms project a growing industry, with market size climbing into the billions of dollars.

Bernard Harris, Jr., MD

This projected growth has caught the attention of investors. Representatives of small and large investment firms, early stage and expansion venture capitalists, private and corporate investment interests and individual financiers have all expressed a desire to enter into our market. For telemedicine entrepreneurs looking to raise capital this can be a great opportunity. However, before polishing your elevator pitch, it is important to do your homework about venture capital. You need to know where to find it, how to get it and whether it is right for you and your organization.

The American Telemedicine Association—and the ATA Annual Meeting in particular—is a venue where you can find these answers. Our tradeshow has always attracted a large group of venture capitalists looking to invest in telemedicine companies large and small. We expect the number of investment attendees to significantly increase this year, as we are hosting the event in Silicon Valley, the epicenter for technology and venture capital in America.

Of course, there's always room for growth. Telemedicine, as an industry, could benefit from a massive infusion of capital (We project telemedicine to be the next tech-boom!). To help bring this about, ATA is hosting a special forum for financial investors where attendees will explore industry trends and market opportunities for investment in private and emerging public telemedicine/telehealth companies. This invite-only event aims to introduce telemedicine, telehealth and mHealth to investors unfamiliar with the market.

In addition, ATA has organized a special investor panel discussion, open to all attendees, on Monday afternoon. The panel will explore the telemedicine industry from the investor's perspective, informing attendees about what they need to do to attract capital partners. Both events support ATA's mission to promote industry-wide success and present a broad and unbiased view of investment opportunities.
